Is there a difference in the meaning of Sparrow and Swallow tattoo’s?

It seems that sparrow and swallow tattoo’s seem to mean the same thing..(sailors in the navy, or people released from prison meaning freedom) so I was wondering if they do actually have the same meaning or not?

and what are your opinions of these tattoo’s? if you were to get one would some people think it would mean you had been in prison?

thankss

right ok – some of the answeres above (no offence not trying to be rude or anything ) are WRONG!!!!

there is a difference and that is – sparrow tattoos 30year plus ago were sailour tattoos nearly every sailour had them and it was a sign of freedom as you say because of the open sees and they felt free whenever they were sailing

the swallow tattoos 30 years plus ago where prison tattoos commonly found on the backs of hands and on the neck this was a classic meaning of the ‘jail bird’ tattoo but where the answers above are wrong the difference is not massive because the prison assosiated swallow tattoo also ment freedom because often they had done their time and were free to go anywhere they wanted just like a swallow in real life

nowerdays swallow and sparrow tattoos are very common and popular and still have the meaning of freedom but more often than not now they are just seen as (JUST TATTOOS) nothing more meaning wise because they have became so popular in the newschool design (bright coloured and cartoony)

as for the will people think you have been in prison if you have a swallow or sparrow tattoo – being hevily tattooed myself i am reguallly stereotyped as a tattooed criminal when actually i havent done any time or even commited a crime more serious that 1 or 2 parking tickets lol so to be honest whatever tattoo you get some of the more shallow people are going to assume things anyway whatever the design (in the ink word we say ‘all the fun of being tattooed’) its just what happens lol

i will also post a link because my fingers ache with typing there are soooooo many meanings behing sparrow and swallow tattoos i cant type it all here

A sparrow tat means you are a pirate, as in Capt. Jack.

A swallow tat means you live by the code, "spitters are quitters."

I always associated swallow tattoos with sailors, never prison. I do really like the traditional swallow tattoo, especially now that tattoos have improved so much and they are no longer really thick black lines, they look very elegant now. In fact my next tattoo is going to be two swallows, and I don’t really care what anyone else thinks of them, they can come and ask me if they want to know, and no, I have not been in prison.
