Why does a tattoo have to have meaning?

Why do people always say don’t get a tattoo unless it’s meaning full? I mean who cares, it’s on your body. I’m just curious what other people think that do have tattoos. I have 8 and none of them have meaning besides i really like them.

Hey – im a girl with a lot of tattoos and the I’ve drawn all of my own and all of spiritual nature. I CHOSE to have mine be meaningful because i love telling the stories behind them. People ask me all the time about them and it feels great to say what they mean to me. My life is written on my body and im proud of that.
I truely believe you should get whatever damn tattoo you want, wherever you want, whenever you want. The whole point of having them in the first place is to be an individual and be able to look in the mirror and be proud of what you see. If you are comfortable in saying "No real meaning, i just loved the picture" – THEN WHO THE HELL CARES!!!??? Its your body and you are going to die with it. You have only one chance to do it YOUR way…. so make sure you ALWAYS do it your way… It would be a complete hypocrisy to the individualism of body modification if you were to change your mind just because someone else said it "should" mean something. Wear it loud and proud… dont ever be ashamed of what you’ve got. Its there for YOUR life, no one elses….
p.s. of course it means something to you in some way, its on your body.

i think thats totally cool that youre just getting a tattoo for fun and a lot of people do the same thing. but some people usually have a story with a tattoo.

I’ll say that on Yahoo Answers
but almost always when it seems to me like the person is just
A – trying to impress other people with something "cute"
or B – getting a tattoo that’s been done 87 million times already

they don’t have to have meaning….but sometimes, the ones with meaning are the best ones
and a ton of the time, tattoos with no meaning look dumb

but it’s all just an opinion thing….

it doesnt have to, its just more likely that if it doesnt you might regret it later on in like because it might not be something that you ‘just like’ anymore when you are like 50. if it has meaning then that meaning will never go away like a fad and you’ll never regret it.

i just do both together…i incorporate the tats that i ‘think are just cute’ into a tat that has meaning to me. so it means something and looks pretty. haha

mine is just a little flower – the only reason it has meaning is because me & my best friend got the same one on the same day.

for me, i could never have something on my body permanently that didn’t have a meaning. i’ve seen so many cool tattoos that i would love to have, but i know i would get sick of them. meaning is a must for me..

but thats just me. people can get whatever they want, i like them either way. :)

Wow. How refreshing to read your question- I want to get another tattoo (have 2 now) and first off, I’m not 100% sure WHAT I want. I keep reading how it should mean something & now I feel all pressured to make it so, yet I have this feeling that when I see what I like, I’ll know. I was going to post a similar question as yours, as I am wondering too- I just don’t know. My 2 I currently have, hold no "special" meaning.

When people say don’t get a tattoo unless it’s meaningful it’s usually in regards to tattoo remorse later on in life. If you get a tat to commemorate an event or triumph then you’ll always associate that tattoo with something of significance that will not change over time, the opposite is usually true with our tastes. What we thought was cute when we’re "young" may mean nothing to you when you’re older. But that’s more advice than a rule of thumb. If you like them then congrats.

A lot of people get tattoos that mean nothing, mostly because they think it looks nice. If that floats your boat, fine. But tattoos are permanent. Unless you’re willing to spend a lot of money and experience a lot more pain by getting your tattoos removed, you’re gonna have them for life. I think in the long run, you might start regretting the fact that your tattoos are meaningless.

I think it’s very important that each tattoo has a meaning and a story behind it. If you’re going through that much pain and spending money on ink, then it should at least mean something to you. It seems kinda shallow otherwise. I got my first tattoo as a tribute to someone and to signify my own freedom after I turned 21. And no matter how many years I have to look at that same tattoo, I’ll never regret getting it because it means so much to me.

Either way, to each their own. If you think you won’t regret your tattoos if they mean nothing, then that’s great for you. Try getting one that means something though. You might like that one the best. :)

That annoys me too. I’ll get a tattoo for whatever the hell reason I want. It can be meaningful or it can be the fact that I like getting tattoos and I thought it looked cool. I have a half sleeve and it drives me insane when random people ask me "what’s the meaning behind it?" or " what meaning does it have?". I think it’s cool when people have a cool story about why their tattoo is meaningful to them, but that doesn’t mean everybody’s tattoos have to have meaning.

I know what you mean, I have 19 starts going up my side, starting from my lower stomach, through my ribs, and to the top of my back and it means nothing, it just looks badass lol.

but i know what people mean when they say it should have meaning, because its going to be on your body for the rest of your life and you don’t want to regret it later when your in your 30’s or like 80 years old lol.

There probabaly is a meaning behind them even if you don’t realise it. I mean, the colours you picked..maybe you like them for a reason. The fact you just really like them is meaning enough, who cares if they don’t tell your life story.
I mean in 40 years time they’ll tell a story of things you liked, the kind of person you were etc.

    I like your honesty :)

I personally only get tattoos that mean something to me, but I think it’s cool when people just have fun with it and get whatever they feel like. Who knows maybe one day I’ll do it too, you never know.
