What is the meaning behind your tattoo, if any?
I got my first one last summer, at age 21. It’s a butterfly on my ankle. At first, it didn’t really have any meaning, I just love butterflies, but now, looking back, it couldn’t be more fitting. Butterflies are about transformation, and that was exactly what I was, and still am, going through. I got a new job, bought a house, broke up with my boyfriend of 4 years, bought a new car, and so much more. So the tattoo has tons of meaning, which I didn’t realize at first. So it means so much more to me.
What made you get your tattoo(s)?
I can’t pick a best answer, how can I say one person’s meaning is better than anothers? I’ll let it go to voting!
My first tatto is a sun with the kanji symbol meaning "strength" inside of the sun. I had just split up with my husband, and that tattoo represented my inner strength, with the sun being my life. My second tattoo is my zodiac sign with my Chinese new year symbol integrated into it. That one is shaded two colors of blue, for my birthstone. My third tattoo is a heart with my gramma’s name on it. It is a beautiful tattoo. She died a week before Christmas, and we were pretty close, and I miss her terribly. That one is on the inside of my right forearm so I can look at it whenever I need to. =]

I got mine as closure of very difficult times, It is a Moon with a star, maybe it has nothing to do with closure for others but for me it is. So I believe it can be anything you want and mean what ever you want.

I have a thing for butterflies, too. I have four butterfly tattoos, one of which I designed with my dbf’s initials hidden in the top wings.
My very first tattoo was of a lizard, because at the time I really liked lizards and I really really wanted a tattoo. Some years later, I was thinking I needed to get it covered with something more feminine and something that represented me-so I figured since I believe in Jesus and since I am mostly Irish, Scottish, Welsh and Mannx, it would be fitting to get a Celtic cross. When I reached my first major goal of getting rid of 100lbs(was 315lbs and now 211lbs), I rewarded myself with that cover up. I LOVE it and I know I can live with it for the rest of my life. Even my grandma, who is not big on tattoos, really likes it.(She contributes a good part of my Celtic genes!)
I have the Hebrew meaning of my name("source of joy") written in Japanese caligraphy. I have a heart design of my own that I made to represent interracial love-it also looks a little yin-yang-y come to think of it-which I guess is also fitting. I also have cherries on my girl part, with the words "thick Juicy sexy" around it. It is one that me and my best homegirl went and got together-we had planned for two months that we were going to get matching tattoos on that part-cuz we discovered both of us were thinking for about a year-since we had our youngest kids(her son is 10 weeks younger than mine). So forever we have that bond between us.

I have a large stargazer lily with a fairy hiding out under one of the leaves on my back. My name is Suzanne, which means "lily" in Hebrew. My grandmother named me when I was born and she always said I reminded her of a little fairy. When she died last year, the family took a flower from this very large rose/lily arrangment that was on display at her viewing and we each placed a single flower on her casket when it was time to say goodbye. Actually the funeral director handed them out to us. When it came my turn to get a flower, he started to hand me a rose, then hesitated. He then handed me a lily and I got chills all over my body. My mother did the same because she knew what my name had meant to my grandmother. It was like my grandmother was there telling this man to give me the lily, because she knew that’s what I would want.

hmmm, lessee—the cross of questioning on my right upper arm is there because i’ve always liked that symbol. Blue Oyster Cult made it popular. Totoro is on my left upper arm–in Japanese mythology he is the King of the forest–and my kids loved the movie when they were little. On my back is the Marilyn Manson lightning bolt–it looks good. on my forearm is a little creature of flame, drawn by my daughter. all the tatts mean something to me and i’m tickled to death to have them all.

I have one to represent my german heritage, flowers on my foot to remind me there is always some sort of simplistic beauty in the world, a gemini symbol, and a lotus to remind me of hard times that I have overcome, and to remind me that I will always get over the hard things.

I have crows tattooed on my forearms. A murder on my right arm, and a single crow on my left. Its symbolic for me because i came up with the idea. The murder of crows is society to me, and i’m the "crow left of the murder" on the left obviously. All crows are bleeding, which represents struggles in life, which you would have if you were a part of the murder (society) or by yourself.

I have a side portrait of my daughter with her Chinese name (her real Chinese name) on the area that her head was in on the side of my back when I was pregnant. My tattoo has meaning to me because it represents my accomplisment in actually having her and a personal little celebration of the fact that she was born and came into my husband’s and my life. My mom or her grandma designed the tattoo along with my tattoo artist.

I have a red/white/blue star on my right forearm because of my birthday being July 4 and I’m proud I’m American. I have a clover just below my collarbone for my Irish heritage, a scottish (rampant)lion between my shoulder blades for my Scottish heritage, a dreamcatcher on my left bicep for my Native heritage, and finally a butterfly on my right foot with my daughter’s name above it because I love her so much and she loves butterflies.

I have a couple lines of music on my side. Music has always been a huge part of my life [both in terms of passion and participation], and I chose the lines from a song that’s been very representative of my life for the past seven or eight years. I’ve been struggling with major depression, which has impacted my life in a number of huge ways [I basically fell off the edge of the world for a long time: quit violin after it was essentially the focal point of my life for eight years, dropped out of high school, and sometimes didn't see anyone I knew but my family for months at a time because I barely left the house; it's hard to function when you sleep for twenty hours a day]. I’m slowly recovering, but it’s a constant two-steps-forward, one-step-back situation. However, I’ve made it this far and I’ll continue to push on. Obviously these past years have had a major impact on me and will always be a formative part of who I am and who I become; unlike some people who essentially dismiss the difficult parts of their lives, I know I’ll always be able to draw on and learn from this. It isn’t something I should ever forget. My tattoo commemorates this part of my history and the fact that I’m a stronger person for having gone through it, as well as being a reminder for me to hold on through the inevitable tougher times.

mine has no meaning, other than i saw it on the wall, and i liked it, and still do. not ALL tats will have meaning, other than you liked them at that time. i doubt i will ever regret any of my tattoos, because they were inked at certain times in my life. i’ll be getting a large pair of black and gray angel wings on my back, and a domino with wings (probably on my left ankle). the wings are because i want them, and the domino is for my grandma.

My first was a dragon which was my old army unit was called (recon dragons). My last one was a tribute to my grandma. Everything she ever made for any of us she would draw this bird on it. I got her to draw one for me and took it to the tat shop and had it done. So now I will always have my grandma over my heart.

My first tat was a lioness – she stands for pride, beauty, and strength. I was going thru a rough time and got my lioness to remind me what I have inside me, and what I always aim for.
I got my second tattoo when I gained my teaching degree – it begins with a koru (New Zealand Maori curl based on fern shoots) symbolising new beginnings, then flows into the infinity sign. I chose these because teaching was a new career for me, and it held infinite promise.
My third, and final, tattoo is a cheeky little devil doing a wheelie on a motorbike. This is a tribute to my little brother, killed in a moto-cross accident in 2005.
(P.S. I like sharpeiluvr’s answer!)
