New tattoo on ankle. Any suggestions on how to keep it clean and well?
Just curious as to what other people have to say on the subject. ![]()
Ankle tattoos are simple to maintain during the healing process. Just don’t let your clothing rub and sleep on clean sheets. Cleaning throughout the day is essential. Antibacterial soap and patting dry will help you out. You don’t necessarily have to apply ointment or lotion after each washing. Your skin can always benefit from some fresh air. But don’t take any baths and don’t get it in the sun. If you are getting a heavy amount of needle work done keep in mind you will have swelling. Ankles are great at swelling. Whenever you get a chance, elevate your ankle and take some pressure off of it. It will make a huge difference in healing time. Swelling is a slow down. Squeezes the blood vessels and all that…but it won’t hurt you either. Just trying to be helpful. But anyway to sum it up, clean it more than a couple times a day and go easy on the ointment or lotion…don’t wear abrasive clothing or tights, nylons or any of that stuff and remember that bedding! Clean blankets! It’s unbelievably common for people to develop infections and they are clueless as to how they got them. An alarming number of people roll around 8 hours a night in bedding that hasn’t been cleaned in days, weeks, sometimes even months. So beware. Best of luck.

I always wash my tattoos four or five times a day with antibacterial soap and pat dry with a paper towel. Then I apply a thin layer of A+D ointment on it and rub that in very well. If you leave it goopy, it could pull color. Then I let it air out, which means no clothes covering it for a couple of days. After about 3 days, or whenever my tattoo starts to peel, then I switch to a scent-free dye-free lanolin-free petroleum-free lotion like Curel Ultra Healing Lotion. Doing this has left me with bright, vibrant tattoos that will last me for years to come.
