Do you think that its important to get a tattoo with a deep meaning, or just get one because you like tattoos?
I love tattoos, but dont have anyting particularly meaningful. At this point, if I got a tattoo the meaning behind it would be that I like tattoo art. Have you ever gotten a tattoo just out of liking them, without some deep meaning or representation behind it?
Some will swear by that your tattoo has to have meaning because it is for life. Try this on: if you get a tattoo because you think it is a cool image does this not have meaning? Yes. Does it represent a time in your life? Yes. Maybe even in a year from now your likes and dislikes may change and this will give your tattoo even more meaning or represent a time in your life when you were into certain genres of imagry.
So regardless of what anyone may say, EVERY TATTOO has some sort of direct or indirect meaning.
99% of the people who have tattoos or tattoo enthusiasts get work done of something JUST because they like the picture they saw. Many people even site in my chair and say, "Let your imagination run wild and do what ever you want." Getting a tattoo is more about the experience really if you want my honest opinion and less about the imagery.

i think it doesnt matter. you may remember a tattoo as commemorating a time in your life (i.e. you got this flower when you graduated and you’ll always remember your college days when you look at it) or it could be something you deeply believe it and would like to have it permenantly on your body.
personally, all my tattoos have deep meaning. but tattoos are still an artform..at least to me anyway. so i don’t think you NEED to have deep meaning to get a tattoo! it could just look beautiful on your body!

Either way is fine, in my opinon. I think getting something with meaning though, you’ll have less of a chance of going, "why the hell did I get that?" when you’re older. Like, I know of an ‘emo’ girl who got a tattoo of a giant colored ice cream cone on her upper arm. That’s going to be a pain at job interviews, later…

I think that finding an image beautiful is reason enough for a tattoo. I’ve had my half sleeve for six years, got it just because I thought the image was pretty, and haven’t regretted it for a second. My other tattoos are symbolic to me, have personal meaning.

I personally prefer to get tatts with meaning. You want something to last the test of time…something with a story behind it that makes you happy…and definately something that you wont regret.

My butterfly on my hip/lower ab area doesn’t really have meaning. I got it because I wanted a tattoo and liked the butterfly. The only meaning it has is that I turned 18 and was moving out on my own and could do whatever I wanted.
I think it is perfectly fine to get a tattoo just because you like the idea. Not all tattoos have to have meaning it’s just really cool when they do.

Yes I have both. Lots of people have. Its just a little safer to have a meaning because then you are less liekly to change your mind about it.

There doesn’t have to be a special meaning behind your tattoo as long as you know that 50 years from now you aren’t going to be wishing you had never put that damn tattoo on your skin! But even I got a tattoo that had "meaning" and I still regretted it years later. Only advice I would have is to never get tattoos with your boyfriend/girlfriend/wife/husband, if you break up, you’re screwed.

All mine have meaning so far, but I don’t have a problem with people getting random things! It’s totally up to the individual, and it annoys me when people say tattoos SHOULD or MUST have meaning.
The only thing I would say is that for *some* people, tattoos with meaning behind them are less likely to become regrettable choices in future years – with me for example, I have always been fickle natured and chop and change my opinions about things, which at first was a factor in putting me off getting tattoos, but now all the ones I have are so meaningful to me and resemble such important parts of my life, that I know there’s no way I’ll ever be back asking for a cover up or laser, because even if I go off the design or tattoos at all (which won’t happen, but for arguments sake!), I would never want these reminders off my body.
So that’s the only positive thing I would say about tattoos with meaning over tattoos without. But that’s the individuals judgement to make! And saying all this, I have three large pieces on my back, all of which are dedicated to family, but I am designing (or thinking about designing) a large tattoo entwining around all these to fill out the rest of my back, and that will be of black and grey roses – I am attaching them to the significance of being the national flower of my country, which is why I chose the rose, but in all honesty I’d already decided on flowers and just plucked that out of the air – it doesn’t mean a great deal to me, I just want it to make my other tattoos look more attractive!
As we all know, it’s our skin, there is no right or wrong (within the realms of the law and morality, which this is!) – so who is anybody to judge anybody else for getting a tattoo for a different reason to them!

I think it’s important to get a tattoo you love and one that’s well done. If you love it because it’s meaningful, that’s cool. If you love it because it’s beautiful or awesome or whatever you’re going for, that’s cool too. Only really two of my tattoos have any deeper meaning, all the other ones just look cool.
Get whatever tattoos you want, just always go to a good artist or you’ll pay the price in the end!

i have both. the tattoos i got when i was much younger…14-18 are mostly stupid, but as i got older i started to stick with just meaningful tats. (i’m 26)
but i say it’s your body and you should be able to do whatever you want to it…nobody else has to live with it accept you.

My tattoo’s are meaningful to me but if i liked something which had no meaning whatsoever i would still get it.
I have a tribal on my back with a heart on it, i had this because i knew i was in love but didn’t want to ‘brand’ myself with his name. i wanted to remember how happy i felt with him at that point in my life (and still do)
I designed my own little ‘thing’. Its actually my name if you look closely but i loved how it looked so i went and got it tattooed! So yeah…there is one that has no specific meaning.
I also had my daughters name on my wrist. She is the most precious thing in my life and i LOVE that tattoo.
So yeah, if you like the look of a tattoo, it doesn’t have to have deep meaning behind it. x

Tats with meanings behind them are supposed to be ‘emotionally uplifting’. Meaning, they make you feel better about having them.
Getting one ‘just because’ is kinda like wearing your hat tipped to the side for a day. Only this hat can’t be straightened and stays on your head forever.
Unless you want your body looking like a public bathroom stall, I’d suggest getting a tattoo with meaning, or atleast with some kind of planning behind it…

I don’t like them, but some of them are BEAUTIFUL works of art.
But I believe they should be somewhere other than your body….

Either. Yes, I go for the ART thing. Beautiful art is what i love, it doesn’t HAVE to mean anything.
